Black paint shows every mark, but it also shows depth better than any other colour – if the wax on it is right. Soft99 Dark & Black is a Japanese hard car wax made for exactly that: a synthetic formula with natural carnauba, tuned to deepen black, dark grey, navy and deep red paintwork, with around two months of water-beading protection from each coat.

The 300 g tin is one of the biggest hard-wax tins on the shelf and is good for around 30 full applications, which makes it a sensible first wax that will last a long time.

Why it works

  • Carnauba in a synthetic base – the carnauba brings warmth and depth to dark colours, the synthetic base keeps it easy to spread and buff off.
  • Strong water beading – rain runs off instead of sitting on the paint, so the car stays cleaner between washes.
  • Around 30 applications per tin – at 300 g it works out well under a pound a coat.
  • Sponge supplied – all you need besides the wax tin is a clean microfibre to buff off.

When to use it

After a full wash and decontamination, on cool paint out of direct sun. It is the classic weekend wax for a black hatchback or a dark grey daily driver – then top it up every couple of months, or sooner once winter road salt starts wearing it down.

Straight from us

If you have a dark car and have never waxed it by hand, this is where we would start. It is forgiving to use, the tin lasts ages, and the jump in depth on black paint after one coat is obvious. When you want more gloss or longer life, step up to Soft99 Mirror Shine for dark cars or the Fusso Coat 12 month wax – but plenty of people never need to.

What it won't do

It will not remove swirls or scratches – it is a protective wax, not a polish, so any defects need correcting first. It is made for dark paint, so on white or silver cars choose a light-paint wax instead. And two months is the honest figure: this is a wax, not a long-term coating.

Frequently asked questions

Is Soft99 Dark & Black Wax good for beginners?

Yes. It spreads easily, the haze tells you when it is ready to buff, and the supplied sponge means you can start straight away with just a microfibre cloth.

How long does Soft99 Dark & Black Wax last?

Around two months per coat. Washing with a pH-neutral shampoo and following up with a quick detailer such as Soft99 Rain Drop helps it last longer.

Can I use it on a white or silver car?

It is formulated for dark paint. For light colours, go for Mirror Shine for light cars or King of Gloss Light.

How do I apply a hard car wax?

Work on clean, cool paint out of the sun. Put a little wax on the sponge, spread a thin layer in a criss-cross pattern one panel at a time, wait for a white haze, then buff off with a clean, dry microfibre.

What is the difference between Dark & Black and Mirror Shine?

Dark & Black is the bigger, more economical tin at 300 g with around two months of protection. Mirror Shine is a 200 g tin that buffs off with no waiting and lasts around three months.
