Magic Sponge Melamine Cleaning Sponge

Scuffs on the door sill, shoe marks on the kick plates, the grey smear on the plastic where a bag has rubbed for a year — an interior cleaner and a cloth will not shift them. The Magic Sponge will. It is melamine foam, a very fine open-cell structure that works like an extremely gentle abrasive when wet, and it lifts marks from hard plastic, rubber and vinyl with nothing but water.

When to use it

After the normal interior clean, on the marks that are still there. Door sills, boot lip trim, the plastic behind the pedals, rubber mats and the base of the door cards. Wet it, squeeze it out, rub lightly.

Test it somewhere hidden first. Melamine is an abrasive, however fine — on textured hard plastic it is brilliant, on gloss or soft-touch trim it can dull the surface. Light pressure, and stop as soon as the mark has gone.

What it won't do

Do not use it on paint, gloss piano black, screens or soft-touch dashboards — it will haze them. It also wears away as you use it, so it is a consumable, not a tool for life.

Frequently asked questions

Is a magic sponge safe on car interiors?
On hard textured plastic, rubber and vinyl, yes with light pressure. Not on gloss trim, soft-touch coatings, leather or screens.

Do I need a cleaner with it?
No. Water alone works. An APC on the mark first will speed it up on greasy marks.

Can I use it on alloy wheels or paint?
No. It is fine enough to mar clearcoat and lacquered alloys. Keep it to interior hard plastics and rubber.
