Wheels are the dirtiest job on the car, and brake dust is the one contaminant you absolutely do not want migrating onto paint. Red is the standard warning colour in a colour-coded kit for exactly that reason — it marks the cloth as wheels-only, so nobody picks it up by mistake halfway through a detail.

How to use it

Use it once your wheel cleaner has been agitated and rinsed — never as a dry wipe over dry brake dust, which is how you put swirls into a lacquered rim.

Care

Wash red separately from your paint and glass cloths. Bonded iron particles picked up off a wheel survive a wash cycle and will transfer onto whatever they are washed with. 40°C, microfibre detergent, no fabric softener.

Two reds, minimum. One for the faces, one for the barrels and arches — the barrels are filthy enough to ruin a cloth you were hoping to finish the faces with.

Directions

1. Wash new cloths before first use to remove manufacturing residue and lift the pile.
2. Colour-code by job - keep one colour for paint, another for glass, another for wheels and interiors.
3. Use dry for buffing, or lightly damp for cleaning, and fold into quarters so you have eight clean faces to work through.
4. Turn to a fresh face as soon as one loads up with dirt.
5. Never reuse a cloth that has been dropped on the ground until it has been washed.

Machine wash at 30-40C with microfibre detergent. No fabric softener, no bleach, and do not wash with cotton items. Air dry or tumble dry on low.
