Black plastic trim doesn't stay black. A few summers of UV and a few winters of salt turn bumpers, wheel arch liners and mirror caps a chalky grey, and a normal trim dressing only hides it until the next wash. E-Tech Pro Black is a plastic trim restorer rather than a dressing: a pigmented polymer coating that puts the black back into the plastic and cures to a satin finish that E-Tech state will not wash off in the rain.

Why it works

  • Pigmented polymer coating adds colour to the plastic instead of oiling the surface, so grey trim comes back to black rather than dark grey
  • Touch dry in minutes, fully dry in 10 to 15 — no greasy residue, no dust magnet, no streaks down the paint after the first shower
  • UV resistant formula, so the restored colour is protected from the sunlight that faded the trim in the first place
  • Water-based, oil-free, silicone-free and solvent-free — safe to work next to paint and glass
  • A second coat 15 minutes after the first deepens the finish on badly faded trim
  • Complete kit: 236ml bottle, foam applicators in several sizes, fine detailing applicators, gloves, dispensing pot and 8 cleaning sachets to prep the surface

When to use it

On any car where the trim has gone grey and a dressing no longer covers it — front and rear bumper sections, grilles, wheel arch trims, door sills, mirror covers, light surrounds and roof rails. Best done on a dry day with the trim clean, cool and out of direct sun. It also works on interior plastics, though it is most useful outside where the damage is.

Straight from us

The prep is the whole job. Use the cleaning sachets, or an all purpose cleaner, and get the trim properly clean and dry before the first coat, because the coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Then go thin: one light coat, let it dry, and only add a second if the trim was properly grey to begin with. Thick coats are what cause patchiness.

What it won't do

It won't fix trim that is physically damaged, pitted or peeling — it restores colour, not texture. And it is black only: on grey or coloured plastics, or on unpainted textured trim you want kept as it is, use a conventional dressing such as Koch Chemie Plast Star instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is E-Tech Pro Black a dye or a dressing?
Neither exactly. E-Tech Pro Black is a pigmented polymer coating: it carries black pigment into the plastic like a dye would, but it also forms a UV-resistant satin layer on top, so it lasts like a coating rather than washing off like a dressing.

Will it come off in the rain or at the car wash?
E-Tech state that once fully dry it will not wash off in the rain. Give it the full 10 to 15 minutes before the car gets wet.

What if I get it on the paint?
Wipe it off straight away with a damp microfibre while it is still wet. Once cured it is far harder to remove, so mask the panel edge or use the fine detailing applicators along paint lines.

Can I use it on tyres?
Use the matching Pro Black Tyre and Rubber Restorer for tyre sidewalls and rubber hoses — it is the version E-Tech specify for rubber, where this one is specified for plastic.
